Scoring for Suspense

In support of the fifth annual John Duffy Composers Institute sponsored by the Virginia Arts Festival, an exhibit will be available for public viewing at the Diehn Composers Room, 189 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, through November 1, 2009 (8am-5pm, Monday-Friday). Student Concert of Music for Film, Theatre, and Dance

Students of Old Dominion University music faculty member Dr. Andrey Kasparov will present a concert entitled “Incidentally Speaking: Music for Film, Theatre, and Dance.” The event will take place on Thursday, March 26, 2009, from 12:30pm-1:15pm in the Diehn Composers Room. The concert will include works by Andrey Kasparov, Dinos Constantinides, Brian Robison, John Corigliano, and Yann Tiersen. Lisa Relaford Coston will perform as guest soloist on a work written by Andrey Kasparov.

Andrey Kasparov’s manuscripts are a part of the Contemporary Music Research Collection and Brian Robison’s compositions are held in the New Music Performance Collection of the Old Dominion University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room.

Dr. Kasparov is Professor of Music at Old Dominion University, where he also directs Creo, the contemporary-music ensemble.

The University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room is located in Room 189 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of the Norfolk Foundation.

2008 Paul Revere Award Winners Exhibit

The Diehn Composers Room of the University Libraries presents an exhibit featuring the 2008 Paul Revere Award Winners from the Music Publishers Association. These awards honor outstanding examples of graphic design, acknowledging music publishers for their efforts to create art for the music industry.

The exhibit combines winning scores in several categories, with historical background on the use of engraving, lithography, typesetting and woodcut blocks for music reproduction.

The exhibit will be available for public viewing in the atrium of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center through February 17, 2009.

Campaign Song Exhibit Opening

The Diehn Composers Room of the University Libraries presents “Of Thee I Sing: Politics through Song,” an exhibit that commemorates the 2008 presidential election year by canvassing campaign songs of former presidential candidates. The exhibit showcases a variety of campaign songs: songs that illuminate personality or accomplishments, songs scored by famous composers, songs adapted from Broadway musicals, songs that croon slander, notarize political corruption, chant social reform and much more. The first campaign song, the first great singing campaign, and other campaign song first appearances such as bilingual languages and candidates quotes are showcased along with presidential photographs, political cartoons, campaign scores, and more. All exhibit materials and items are from Diehn Composers Room and Perry Library collections.

The exhibit will be available for public viewing at the Diehn Composers Room, 189 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, through April 30, 2009. Viewing is available at the Diehn Composers Room from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
