The Old Dominion University Libraries presents its 8th annual student concert, “Monarchs Made Merry: Brass in the Archive,” featuring the ODU Brass Choir under the direction of Mike Hall, on Thursday, December 8, 2011 from 12:30-1:15pm in the Diehn Composers Room.

The series was created by the Library to provide students with the opportunity to perform for the University community and to celebrate 20th century composition.
The Brass Choir will perform songs such as Let it Snow, Greensleeves, The Earl of Oxford’s March, Sleigh Ride, and more.

The University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room is located in Room 189 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

Free Movie Night at the Diehn Composers Room: "Night Waltz: The Music of Paul Bowles”

To coincide with the 34th Annual Literary Festival, the University Libraries' Diehn Composers Room is hosting a free movie night on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. A short program about the music of Paul Bowles will be presented by our guest lecturer, Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno, prior to the start of the movie.

Light Refreshments will be served.

Seating is limited. This is an informal event where use of the floor space is encouraged. You are welcome to bring pillows and blankets to sit on the floor. Chairs will also be provided for those who would like them.

New Portable Listening Stations

Summer 2011 has brought many new updates for the Diehn Composer’s Room: fabulous new furniture, more study space, and now, portable listening stations! On a crisp autumn afternoon, what could be better than completing required listening outside under a shady tree? Or take the equipment to a practice room to work with. As with all DCR equipment, the portable listening stations can be checked out for a maximum of three hours at a time. Of course, CDs placed on reserve must remain inside the music library. With so many different options, you’ll have no reason to procrastinate on homework this fall!

Finally, all the new furniture is in place and all services have been restored. Moving and Hauling destroyed the old study carrels yesterday - we were quite happy to see them go.

It did take until today to get all the equipment set back up, but here it is, ready for you to use.

We'll be closed on Monday, July 5th, but feel free to drop in later to see how it all looks in person.

Things haven't gone quite as planned with the new furniture:

There was a mishap with our scheduling and, as a result, Moving and Hauling couldn't come to remove our old furniture on Wednesday as planned. The new furniture was still suppose to arrive Thursday morning, so we needed to find somewhere to put it all. While we have the ability to shove it all in the DCR, we had to keep in mind that we must be able to get the old stuff out somehow on Monday.

We kept the listening equipment in the Reading Room and moved most of the new tables in between our study carrels. Two extra tables are in the foyer and about 30 chairs are in Jessica Mirasol's, our archivist, workroom.

Needless to say, a few services are still unavailable. Our computer lab and printing capabilities are down. There simply wasn't anywhere to set them up. We suggest using the Web or Art Library labs instead.

Otherwise, we fully up and running. Feel free to come in to study, check items out or just test out the new chairs - they're much more comfortable than the old ones!

New Furniture

After several months of waiting, we are finally expecting our new furniture to arrive tomorrow. The library will stay open, but expect a little bit of a mess and a few services to go down here and there. This is what we have planned:

All of the listening equipment has been moved into the Reading Room.
The computer lab is down. Feel free to use the Art Library's down the hall.
Printing will be down but the copier functions will still work.

As our situation changes, I will post it here and on Facebook. And yes, pictures of the new stuff will be posted as well.

This is a great opportunity for music faculty or students to learn about new databases and library services or get help with their assignments. No need to make an appointment. "December Jazz"

The Old Dominion University Libraries presented its 6th annual student concert, “December Jazz,” featuring the ODU Jazz Choir and Jazz Combo under the direction of John Toomey, on Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 12:30-1:15pm in the Diehn Composers Room.

The series was created by the Library to provide students with the opportunity to perform for the University community and to celebrate 20th century composition.

The Jazz Choir performed songs such as Exactly Like You, Just Squeeze Me, Embraceable You, So Danco Samba, Silent Night, and a Christmas Medley. Works were also performed by the Jazz Combo.

A well-known keyboardist and leader of the John Toomey Trio, Toomey is associate professor of jazz studies and music technology at ODU and the recipient of a 2000 SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award. Prior to joining Old Dominion, he was keyboardist and music director for jazz legend Maynard Ferguson, with whom he recorded several compact discs. Toomey has traveled the globe to perform at such venues as the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Berlin Jazz Festival.

The student performers were Andrew Bohnert, Christopher Burnette, Elizabeth Duncan, Rebecca Garber, Brent Hartigan, Dale Paul Lazar, Rachel Mackey, Jessica Metcalf, Robyn Nadolny, Ryan Smith, Kelly Soprano, John Kidd, and Steve Lazar. John Toomey provided the piano accompaniment for the works presented and Professor David Walker provided the percussion accompaniment. There were 62 audience members in attendance for the concert. ODU Faculty present included Chandra de Silva, Dean of Arts and Letters, Dr. Nancy Klein, Dr. Alfred Townsend, Lee Teply, and Dennis Zeisler.

Ann Pettingill, Associate University Librarian, welcomed the audience members to the event. Elizabeth Hogue, Instruction and Music Collections Librarian, introduced the Diehn Composers Room Team and the current exhibit. Programs were also designed, printed and distributed to the audience.

At the end of the performance, Elizabeth Hogue presented a Certificate of Appreciation to all student performers and John Toomey in recognition of their participation. A reception of cookies, hot chocolate, and punch allowed audience members to linger and speak to student performers following the concert. This year the Team secured the services of a student of Steve Latham, the Music Department’s recording engineer, to record the event for us.

The event was very successful for a sixth year in a row. It is another tribute to the hard work of the DCR Team and the collaboration of John Toomey, the student performers, Steve Latham, and the Music Department.

To coincide with our exhibit Scoring for Suspense: Music for the Movies, the Diehn Composers Room is hosting a free movie night on Monday October, 26, 2009. A short program about the use of music in suspense films will be presented by Jessica Mirasol, Music Archivist, prior to the start of the movie.

Popcorn, candy, soda, and water will be served.

Seating is limited. This is an informal event where use of the floor space is encouraged. You are welcome to bring pillows and blankets to sit on the floor. Halloween costumes are also encouraged, but not necessary.

Student Concert of Music for Film, Theatre, and Dance

Students of Old Dominion University music faculty member Dr. Andrey Kasparov will present a concert entitled “Incidentally Speaking: Music for Film, Theatre, and Dance.” The event will take place on Thursday, March 26, 2009, from 12:30pm-1:15pm in the Diehn Composers Room. The concert will include works by Andrey Kasparov, Dinos Constantinides, Brian Robison, John Corigliano, and Yann Tiersen. Lisa Relaford Coston will perform as guest soloist on a work written by Andrey Kasparov.

Andrey Kasparov’s manuscripts are a part of the Contemporary Music Research Collection and Brian Robison’s compositions are held in the New Music Performance Collection of the Old Dominion University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room.

Dr. Kasparov is Professor of Music at Old Dominion University, where he also directs Creo, the contemporary-music ensemble.

The University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room is located in Room 189 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of the Norfolk Foundation.

2008 Paul Revere Award Winners Exhibit

The Diehn Composers Room of the University Libraries presents an exhibit featuring the 2008 Paul Revere Award Winners from the Music Publishers Association. These awards honor outstanding examples of graphic design, acknowledging music publishers for their efforts to create art for the music industry.

The exhibit combines winning scores in several categories, with historical background on the use of engraving, lithography, typesetting and woodcut blocks for music reproduction.

The exhibit will be available for public viewing in the atrium of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center through February 17, 2009.

Campaign Song Exhibit Opening

The Diehn Composers Room of the University Libraries presents “Of Thee I Sing: Politics through Song,” an exhibit that commemorates the 2008 presidential election year by canvassing campaign songs of former presidential candidates. The exhibit showcases a variety of campaign songs: songs that illuminate personality or accomplishments, songs scored by famous composers, songs adapted from Broadway musicals, songs that croon slander, notarize political corruption, chant social reform and much more. The first campaign song, the first great singing campaign, and other campaign song first appearances such as bilingual languages and candidates quotes are showcased along with presidential photographs, political cartoons, campaign scores, and more. All exhibit materials and items are from Diehn Composers Room and Perry Library collections.

The exhibit will be available for public viewing at the Diehn Composers Room, 189 Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, through April 30, 2009. Viewing is available at the Diehn Composers Room from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Funding for this exhibit is provided by a grant from the Norfolk Foundation.
